One night will be spent on the very unique experience of the Santa Claus Express Overnight Train. This iconic train takes you through the Finnish wilderness overnight and arrives into the Arctic Circle in the morning.

The trains are typically comfortable and provide a restful journey. The cabins are 2 berths per cabin, so please keep in mind this is a shared experience between other travellers. Depending on group size, some travellers may have to share with passengers that aren’t part of our group (though this is unlikely). All cabins have heating and shared bathrooms at the end of the carriage.

  • The trip starts in Helsinki (HEL Airport) and ends in Rovaniemi (RVN Airport).

  • We recommend packing literally anything warm and practical clothing, as temperatures in Lapland can be extremely cold.

We will send a full packing list closer to the trip, but be sure to pack essential winter gear, a hat, scarf, and sturdy waterproof boots for outdoor activities. You can also rent winter gear while in Lapland, and we will offer this as an add-on if you’d prefer to rent gear there rather than packing big snow suits and boots!

Don’t forget your swimsuit as saunas are a huge part of the culture here!

You might also want to bring a small backpack for day trips and activities.

  • A small, durable suitcase or backpack is best, as you’ll be limited on space during the overnight train and even hotel rooms in Lapland can be on the smaller size.

  • The cold temperatures in Lapland can be intense, especially for those not used to freezing weather! If you’re sensitive to the cold or prefer warmer climates, this might not be the best trip for you.

*I’m from Phoenix, AZ and Lapland was my first ever winter holiday, and I absolutely loved it! If you come prepared with the right clothing, its amazing!

This trip includes outdoor activities like ice fishing which can be physically demanding, so it’s important to be comfortable with active experiences.

While the Northern Lights are definitely a highlight of this trip, please keep in mind that they are never guaranteed - though you’ll have a higher chance of seeing them in November in Lapland. Let’s keep our fingers crossed!!!

The overnight train journey is a unique and cozy experience, but it does mean sharing a cabin with fellow travelers and it is a 12 hour journey.

If you’re looking for a leisurely, relaxation focused trip, this may not be the trip for you. This trip blends adventure, exploration, and free time perfectly.

Finland can be an expensive country, particularly when it comes to dining out. At the igloo accommodation, the only options for lunch and dinner are at the hotel’s restaurant, which are on the pricier side. On the other days, there are more budget friendly dining options available and your Wander Where trip leaders can help advise you on how to save money.

If you’re excited about the idea of snow, adventure, and the Northern Lights, this trip will be nothing short of magical!!

  • A deposit of $299 is due at the time of booking to secure your spot.

The remainder will be split into monthly payments with the final payment due 90 days before the trip start date.

  • Throughout our Arctic adventure, you will have the opportunity to indulge in add-on activities.

    • Husky Farm Visit + Sleigh Ride

    • Northern Lights Snowmobile

    • Private Finnish Sauna + Outdoor Jacuzzi
